4.3 Promoting the extension of co-management of fisheries resources

There has been a trend towards bottom-up co-management of fisheries resources in Senegal since the 2000s, starting with the experimental implementation of resource management in one fishing village and then extending success stories to surrounding fishing villages, regions, and the country as a whole. Although donors were involved in this process, it should not be forgotten that extension activities took place in the surrounding areas through collaboration between fisheries administrators and leaders. In West African countries such as Senegal, where the system of extension workers is not yet entrenched, the dissemination of the concept of co-management of fisheries resources is a major challenge for the guidelines. Firstly, this section explains how to disseminate the resource management activity widely in the target area, how to obtain their agreement, and how to disseminate resource management activities in the area. Secondly, this section explains how fisheries administrators, together with leaders of resource management organisations, can play a central role in disseminating successful cases of fisheries co-management to neighbouring regions and countries.
