Case 2-20 Obtaining sponsorship for activities from cooperating companies: example of sponsorship for octopus resource management activities in Mbour
Key words | regional octopus resource management, Mbour, fisheries value chain, fish exporter, sponsorship |
Context | Since 2012, fish exporters involved in the fisheries value chain in Mbour on Petite Côte, where regional resource management of octopus is implemented, have been contributing funds to the resource management activities. The following is an overview of how the exporters participate in such activities. |
Content | African CFA francs (XAF) (equivalent to 1,000 octopus pots), and ELIM PECHE with XAF 100,000 (equivalent to 125 octopus pots). In addition, COMFISH (a USAID project), with XAF 1,000,000 (equivalent to 1,250 octopus pots), and the Directorate of Fisheries, with XAF 1,700,000 (equivalent to 4,150 octopus pots), also provided sponsorship funds, bringing the total number of octopus pots for egg-laying installed to 6,525. This activity has continued every year since. For example, in 2016, 12,000 octopus pots for spawning were produced and deployed in the department of Mbour. In addition to the above-mentioned fisheries export companies, AFRICA FISH and AMERGE have been added to the list. Donors such as ADU PECHE, PRAO and UPAMES have also become sponsors. Each year, during the octopus fishing season, the four CLPAs in the department of Mbour take turns to organise a ceremony and awareness-raising activities on the sustainable management of fisheries resources, before the pots of octopus are thrown into the sea. |
Lessons Learned | Sponsorship funds from companies exporting octopus abroad have made it possible to produce and deploy octopus pots for spawning each year, promoting the building of new octopus stocks. |
Guideline chapter relevant to this case study | Chapter 2 Establishing and strengthening the resource management implementation system 2.6 Securing and managing funds for activities (3) Obtain sponsorship funds from partner companiesIs it possible to strengthen cooperation within the fisheries value chain and obtain support for activities as sponsorship from fisheries companies that agree with the activities? It is recommended to review possibilities and consider a mechanism to secure funding for resource management activities through sponsorships from relevant organisations. |
Situation to which this case study could refer | An effective way to sustain resource management activities is to build win-win relationships with businesses in the fisheries value chain, such as fish exporters, and obtain funding from them in the form of sponsorship. This case is an effective example of such scheme. |
