Case
Case MT-2 Resource management organisations in Mauritania
【6. Mauritania】
Context | In Mauritania, various organisations have been set up to manage fishery resources. In particular, the National Federation of Fisheries (FNP) plays a major role in promoting co-management of fisheries resources. |
Content | The National Federation of Fisheries (FNP) is a professional organisation that brings together the majority of operators in the maritime sector. It was created on 22 May 1995 in Nouadhibou (following the merger of former structures (FIAP, FIAPECHE), and is a member of the UNPM (National Union of Mauritanian Employers). The artisanal and coastal fishing section is the largest section of the FNP. This section is composed of fishers, fishmongers, processors and transporters. It is a member of the CCNADP, the Pricing Commission and all other national and regional management bodies. For further information, please visit the following website: http://www.unpm.mr/fnp/ |
Lessons Learned | In Mauritania, fishers’ opinions and interests are integrated into management at national level, which is not the case in Senegal, where fishers’ opinions and interests are integrated into management at local level. |
