Case 2-5 Creating tools for awareness-raising activities 1: signboards, posters, activity videos
Key words | Fishermen leader training, dissemination tools, signboard, posters, videos, underwater footage |
Context | It is necessary to create tools to conduct awareness-raising regarding fisheries resource management activities. This case study presents the experience of the previously implemented (COGEPAS) project. |
Content | The COGEPAS project created some awareness-raising tools, such as panels and posters at landing sites and videos, for fisheries resource management activities. The panels installed at the landing sites were used to inform fishers about the content of the fisheries resource management activities (such as target resources, closed season, length of fish allowed, regulated fishing gear and methods, and penalties). As they are installed outdoors, selecting the appropriate materials, methods and locations for installation were considered. Whenever a fishers’ meeting was held, large posters were made, indicating the date, time, place and agenda of the meeting, and posted in public places where villagers could easily see them. In addition to the handwritten ones, when additional posters were needed, others were ordered from a printing company. Video clips of fisheries resource management practice cases had a greater impact on the audience than lectures or manuals. In COGEPAS, experts filmed underwater footage of shellfish reefs and cuttlefish/calamari traps and shared them with the relevant fishers in Joal and Djifer. |
Lessons Learned | To raise awareness of fisheries resource management activities, the COGEPAS project created and used panels and posters at landing sites and case videos of practical examples. These tools served to popularise the concept and content of fisheries resource management activities to stakeholders in fishing villages, while simultaneously providing an opportunity to train fisher leaders through the practice of creating awareness tools. |
Guideline chapter relevant to this case study | Chapitre 2 Establishing and strengthening the resource management implementation system 2.2 Training of stakeholder leaders from fishing villages (3) Strengthen the organisations through daily activitiesAwareness-raising activities are an effective way for leaders to strengthen their capacity through practice. Organisations that promote resource management activities, such as fisheries departments, local governments, and donor agencies, should work with local resource management organisations to create tools such as posters and educational materials using videos and photographs. |
Situation to which this case study could refer | Awareness-raising activities are an effective way to strengthen the capacities of resource management organisations’ leaders. This case study shows what awareness-raising activities to prepare and practice, and the types of required tools. |
